Methods for Year 2001
Since the wreck site is under French jurisdiction, it was difficult to obtain permissions to use certain American research vessels including the submarine with sonar capabilities. The sonar mapping was discontinued and the focus turned to documenting the site via video footage. In addition, divers concentrated on excavating the hull by clearing away the upper layer of sediment (image) and revealing many previously hidden artifacts.
