The French Navy minesweeper La Circe discovered the wreck of the Alabama in November 1984.
Identifying the Wreck
At the request of the French Navy, Captain Max Guérout undertook to identify the site. Based on artifacts recovered by divers and historical research it was positively determined that the wreck was indeed the CSS Alabama. Captain Guérout would go on to be the principal investigator for all archaeological expeditions to the site through 1995, resulting in the recovery of some 200 objects. From 1999 to the present, field operations have been overseen by the American CSS Alabama Association under the direction of Dr. Gordon P. Watts Jr. (Image: Sonar detection of the CSS Alabama wreck site)
