Top priority for this season was placed on excavations within the hull section, with other objectives being the recovery of additional large objects and use of an ROV to collect digital images for precise placement in a photomosaic.
Objectives for Year 2002
Excavation plans included exploration within the crew's quarters and further exposure of the hull, as well as recovery of the vessel's Downton pump, galley stove, and the aft pivot gun (completing a survey of ordnance aboard the CSS Alabama). Eight American archaeologists were teamed with French volunteer divers for increased productivity. The ROV was slated to take readings from two elevations with additional documentation of prominent features.
