Several pieces of shot have also been observed and recovered. One piece in the vicinity of the aft pivot gun is thought to have possibly been from the USS Kearsarge, the ship that sank the CSS Alabama.
Shot Box
A wooden box recovered from the stern forward of the propeller was originally described as simply a "six-sided box with no visible hinges or openings." X-ray examination helped to determine that a shell for a 32-pounder was contained in the box. It was attached to a wood sabot and had been packed in the box for storage.
