Poster Introduction:
The 2010 Flinders University Underwater Archaeology Field
School ran from 1 to 14 February 2010 at Streaky Bay on Eyre Peninsula. Field school, as with many activities in
the field of maritime archaeology, is a collaborative exercise and this year we worked with the South Australian
government's Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH). There were 19 people involved for the duration of the
Field School comprised of 10 students (7 graduate students and 3 undergraduates), 4 staff (2 faculty members -
Mark Staniforth and Emily Jateff, 2 technical officers -John Naumann and Louise Holt) and 2 team supervisors
(Deb Shefi and James Hunter) plus 3 from the SA Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) - David Nutley,
Amer Khan and Shane Holland.
Field school provides students with an introduction to the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing,
mapping, photography (including video), recording, excavation and conservation. The first part of the topic
(two days) consisted of the Australian Institute for Maritime Archaeology (AIMA) and Nautical Archaeology
Society (NAS) Part 1 Training program. The remainder of the topic comprised practical exercises and associated
lecture/seminars on research field methods and techniques. Assessment consisted of two components: course
participation, both in practicals and lectures, as continuous assessment (worth 50%) and site reports and
student folders (worth 50%). We hope you enjoy reading about the Underwater Archaeology Field School in this poster.
