Swivel Gun |
|||||||||||||||
A swivel gun was found on the Industry
site, still in its wrought iron yoke. The gun measures 33 1/2 inches (86
cm) in overall length and has a bore diameter of 1 ¼ inches (3.5
cm). It would have fired ¾ pound balls and would be wedged in place
to use for anti-personnel fire. Markings on the gun include a British
broad arrow, its weight, and a crest. Not much else is known about these
markings. The gun was recovered in similar fashion to the larger cannon.
First, it was swaddled in closed cell foam. It was then wrapped in 2 inch
nylon straps with a single eye arrangement, like the cannon. Captain Ty
Merrit on the Sea Gypsies Two directly lifted it to the surface. The gun
was then placed in a padded plastic container and taken to the conservation
lab. The swivel gun was mechanically cleaned and afterwards, placed in
a 100 gallon tank with a five percent sodium hydroxide solution. The electricity
was set at five amps. |
